Lupita Nyong’o is a Mexican-born Kenyan actress. She was born in 1983, Mexico City, Mexico. She is the daughter of Dorothy Nyong’o and Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o. When she was born her family were political refugees in Mexico. She is the second of six children. Her cousin Isis Nyong’o was named one of Africa’s most powerful women by Forbes magazine in 2012. She moved back to Kenya when she was less than one year old and at the age of sixteen, her parents sent her back to Mexico to learn Spanish. She now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She started her acting career in 2008 when she did a minor role in the film East River. In 2009 she made her appearance in a miniseries Shuga by playing the role Ayira. In 2013 she made her appearance in the film 12 Years a Slave in which she played the role of Patsey for which she won several awards and nominations including: African-American Film Critics Association Award for Best Breakout Performance, Boston Online Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress and Hollywood Film Festival New Hollywood Award among several pending awards.
